Questions about CMMC POA&M Template & Tracker
Which requirements can go on a CMMC POA&M?
Under the CMMC rule, generally only 1-point requirements, plus 3.13.11 when encryption is used but not FIPS-validated. Some requirements can never be on the POA&M, including 3.1.20, 3.1.22, 3.12.4, 3.10.3, 3.10.4 and 3.10.5. The register checks eligibility automatically and warns you about ineligible items.
What is the 180-day deadline?
With Conditional Level 2 status, open POA&M items must be closed within 180 days. You enter the date of your Conditional status and the register calculates each item's deadline and flags anything at risk. Level 1 is different: it allows no POA&M at all.
What makes a good POA&M item?
It names the specific gap, the fix, an owner, resources, dated milestones and the evidence that will prove closure. Weak items say things like improve logging with no date. The Word guide shows weak and strong examples side by side, and closure evidence should be checked by a second person.
Do we need the POA&M if we use the assessment workbook?
Yes. The workbook finds gaps and calculates the score; the POA&M plans and tracks the fixes. Keep them consistent with your SSP so the same requirement shows the same status in all three. The CMMC Level 2 Starter Bundle includes the workbook, SSP and POA&M together.
