ISO 9001:2026 Transition Guide: Changes, Deadline and Step-by-Step Plan
Last updated: 19 September 2026
ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026 and replaces ISO 9001:2015. Certified organizations have a three-year transition period, to September 2029. The clause structure is unchanged, and the new requirements are limited: quality culture and ethical behavior, separate treatment of risks and opportunities, expanded planning of changes, climate change in your context review, and wider awareness requirements. Most companies certified to the 2015 edition can complete the transition in three to six months of part-time work.
What changed in ISO 9001:2026?
| Clause | What changed | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 4.1 Context | You must determine whether climate change is a relevant issue. | Add a climate relevance assessment to your context review and record the conclusion. |
| 4.2 Interested parties | You decide which interested-party requirements are addressed through the QMS. | Add that decision to your interested parties register. |
| 5.1.1 Leadership | Top management must promote and demonstrate quality culture and ethical behavior. | Define what this means for you and keep evidence of leadership actions. |
| 6.1.2 and 6.1.3 | Actions to address risks and actions to address opportunities are now separate sub-clauses. | Split your register. Evaluate and act on opportunities in their own right. |
| 6.3 Planning of changes | Adds communication of the change, monitoring, and review of results. | Extend your change procedure and log to cover the full loop. |
| 7.3 Awareness | People must be aware of quality culture and ethical behavior. | Update induction and awareness training. Keep records. |
| 8.2.1 Customer communication | Covers contingency actions, including disruption to supply. | Check how you tell customers about disruption and who is responsible. |
| Documented information | Wording unified across the standard. Intent unchanged. | No action beyond updating references in your documents. |
| Clause 10 | Reduced from three sub-clauses to two. | Update clause references in procedures and audit checklists. |
| Annex A | Greatly expanded guidance on every clause. No new requirements. | Read it. Auditors will use it to interpret the requirements. |
This table summarises the changes in our own words. It is not a substitute for a licensed copy of the standard.
When is the ISO 9001:2026 transition deadline?
The transition period is three years from publication, so certificates to ISO 9001:2015 stop being valid in September 2029. Your certification body sets the practical timetable: when it will start auditing to the 2026 edition, and the last date it will accept a transition audit so there is time to close findings. Ask them now, and plan to transition at a scheduled surveillance or recertification audit to avoid the cost of a special visit.
How do you transition to ISO 9001:2026?
- Get the standard and read the changes. The free changes summary gives you the overview.
- Run a gap analysis against the 2026 edition. Use the Gap Analysis Workbook.
- Approve a transition plan with owners and dates. Treat the transition as a planned change under clause 6.3.
- Update clause 4 records: context, climate change relevance and interested parties.
- Address leadership, culture and ethics: policy wording, leadership evidence and awareness.
- Split risks and opportunities and extend your change management process.
- Train people and run an internal audit against the 2026 edition using an updated audit checklist.
- Hold a management review, close actions and book the transition audit.
All of the tools for these steps are in the ISO 9001:2026 templates collection, or together in the Transition Toolkit.
What did not change?
The harmonized structure with clauses 4 to 10 stays. The process approach, risk-based thinking and the plan-do-check-act cycle stay. Operational clauses 8.3 to 8.7 are substantively unchanged. There are no new requirements on artificial intelligence, digitalisation or supply chain resilience. A quality manual is still not required.
How much does the transition cost?
For a company that is already certified, the main cost is internal time. External costs are a copy of the standard, any extra audit time your certification body charges for the transition, and whatever support you buy. Consultants typically quote several thousand dollars for a supported transition. Doing it in-house with templates costs a few hundred dollars at most.
