Is a quality manual required by ISO 9001:2026?
ISO 9001 has not required a document called a quality manual since the 2015 edition, and the certification body summaries of the 2026 edition do not list one as a new requirement. You are still required to document the scope of the QMS, the quality policy and objectives, and the information needed to operate your processes. Most companies keep a manual because it puts all of that in one place, and because customers, tender portals and supplier questionnaires keep asking for it.
What should the manual cover?

How long should a quality manual be?
Short enough that people read it. Fifteen to thirty pages is typical for a company of up to a few hundred people. The manual should describe how the system works and point to procedures. It should not repeat them.
How do we tailor the template?
- Replace the bracketed text with your company details, scope and process names.
- Replace the sample process map with your own.
- Delete sections for activities you do not perform, for example design and development, and record the justification in the scope section.
- Link each section to your own procedures and forms.
- Delete the guidance notes, approve and issue the document under your document control procedure.
