What does an ISO 9001 internal auditor do?

An internal auditor checks, on the organisation's behalf, whether the quality management system meets ISO 9001 and the organisation's own requirements and is effectively implemented. Clause 9.2 requires planned internal audits; auditors gather objective evidence, report findings, and must not audit their own work.

• Apply ISO 19011 principles: auditor ethics, evidence-based approach, risk-based audit programmes, process-based auditing, remote auditing.
• Run the full audit cycle: programme, plan, checklist, opening meeting, interviews and sampling, evaluating evidence, classifying findings, writing nonconformities (evidence, requirement, nature), closing meeting, report and corrective-action follow-up.
• Audit the topics that are new or given new emphasis in 2026: quality culture and ethical behaviour, risks versus opportunities, planning of changes, climate change in context, organisational knowledge.

About your certificate

You receive an ISO Cloud Consulting Certificate of Completion when you complete every lesson, pass every knowledge check and quiz, and pass the final exam. It is a certificate of completion only: it is not an accredited auditor qualification (it is not CQI/IRCA, Exemplar Global or PECB), it does not make you a certified or registered auditor, and it does not qualify you on its own to perform third-party certification audits. ISO Cloud Consulting is a new company and intends to apply for international recognition of its course certificates before the end of 2027. Today it serves as documented training evidence for your organisation's auditor competence records under clauses 7.2 and 9.2.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a certificate to be an internal auditor?

ISO 9001 does not require internal auditors to hold a particular certificate. It requires the organisation to determine and evidence competence (clause 7.2). Training based on ISO 19011, together with supervised audit practice, is the usual way to show it. Some employers or customers prefer accredited courses.

Internal auditor or lead auditor: what is the difference?

An internal auditor audits their own organisation's system (first-party audits). A lead auditor leads audit teams, usually for certification bodies or supplier (second- and third-party) audits, and typically holds an accredited lead auditor qualification.

Can I do ISO 9001 internal auditor training online?

Yes. This course is fully online and self-paced, with practical worksheets, role-plays and a mock audit so you practise the skills, not just the theory.
