ISO 9001:2026 Transition Plan Template (Excel and Word)
Short answer: an ISO 9001:2026 transition plan is a dated project plan that takes a certified QMS from ISO 9001:2015 to the 2026 edition before your transition audit. Ours is an Excel plan with 74 pre-filled tasks across eight phases, a Gantt chart that redraws itself when you change a date, a RACI sheet, 16 milestones, and a Word plan document ready to approve. $39, instant download.
See the Transition Plan Template, or get it with the gap analysis and change matrix in the Transition Starter Bundle ($99).
Checked line by line against the published ISO 9001:2026 (version 1.1, October 2026).
Do you need a written transition plan?
ISO 9001:2026 does not ask for a document called a transition plan. But moving to a new edition is a change to your QMS, and clause 6.3 asks you to plan changes in a controlled way: purpose and consequences, integrity of the system, resources, responsibilities and, in the 2026 edition, follow-up. An approved plan is the simplest evidence that you did that. Auditors also find it easier to sample a transition that has an owner, dates and a status column.
What a good transition plan contains
- A target date that drives everything else. Work backwards from the transition audit your certification body offers you.
- Phases in the right order. Understand the changes, assess gaps, plan, update documents, train, audit, review, then the transition audit.
- Named owners for each task, not just "Quality".
- Milestones management can check at each management review.
- Risks to the transition itself, such as a key person leaving or an audit date moving.
What is in the template
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Project plan (Excel) | 74 tasks across eight phases with start date, duration, owner and status. Back-schedules from your target audit date. Default length is 20 weeks. |
| Gantt chart | Redraws automatically from the dates. No macros. |
| RACI sheet | Responsibilities for top management, quality, process owners and internal auditors. |
| Milestone tracker | 16 milestones to report at management review. |
| Plan document (Word) | Scope, objectives, responsibilities, communication plan, resources and transition risks, structured around the clause 6.3 considerations. Ready to approve and file. |
How long should the transition take?
For a small or mid-sized company already certified to ISO 9001:2015, 20 weeks is a comfortable default with one person leading part-time. If your audit is sooner, compress the document update and training phases and run them in parallel. Our article on the 20-week transition plan walks through each week.
ISO 9001:2026 was published in September 2026. Under the transition rules set by accreditation bodies, ISO 9001:2015 certificates stop being valid three years after publication (September 2029). Confirm your own audit dates with your certification body.
Template alone, starter bundle or toolkit?
- You already know your gaps: the Transition Plan Template on its own ($39).
- You need to find the gaps first: the Starter Bundle ($99) adds the Gap Analysis Workbook and Change Matrix for 15% less than buying the three separately.
- You want every tool the plan refers to: the Transition Toolkit ($199) includes the plan and ten more templates, sequenced to the same 20 weeks.
Would you rather have an expert plan it?
Our remote gap assessment (from $1,250) ends with a dated transition plan built on your actual gaps. All work is remote and does not guarantee certification.
Important limits
The template describes requirements in our own words and does not reproduce ISO 9001. Use it with your licensed copy of the standard. A plan supports your transition; it cannot guarantee the outcome of an audit.
Frequently asked questions
Does ISO 9001:2026 require a transition plan?
Not by name. Moving to the new edition is a change to your QMS, and clause 6.3 asks you to plan changes in a controlled way. An approved plan is the simplest evidence that you did.
Does the Gantt chart need macros?
No. It is built with conditional formatting driven by the start date and duration columns, so it works in Excel 2016 or later, Microsoft 365 and Google Sheets.
Can we shorten the 20-week default?
Yes. Change the target audit date or the task durations and every phase and the chart update. Run document updates and training in parallel to compress the plan.
Is it for first-time certification?
It is built for companies moving from ISO 9001:2015. For a first certification, the Complete QMS Documentation Kit includes a 24-week implementation roadmap instead.
