ISO 9001:2026 Internal Audit Checklist (Excel)
Short answer: an ISO 9001:2026 internal audit checklist is a list of audit questions for clauses 4 to 10, updated for the 2026 revision, with space to record evidence and findings. Ours is an editable Excel checklist with more than 200 questions, a separate process-audit sheet, an automatic audit summary, and Word templates for the audit plan and audit report. It costs $59 and downloads instantly.

What makes a good ISO 9001:2026 internal audit checklist?
- Open questions, not yes or no. A question such as “How do you decide which interested-party requirements the QMS will address?” produces evidence. “Are interested parties identified?” produces a tick.
- What to look for. Each question should suggest the records or observations that would show conformity.
- The 2026 changes marked, so your first audit against the new edition covers them: climate change in context, quality culture and ethical behavior, the separate treatment of risks and opportunities, and the wider planning of changes.
- A finding grade on every line: conforms, opportunity for improvement, minor nonconformity, major nonconformity, not audited.
- Two ways to audit: by clause, and by process, because most certification bodies expect process-based audits.

Do we need a new internal audit before the transition audit?
Yes, in practice. Certification bodies expect to see that you have audited your system against the 2026 requirements and reviewed the result in management review before they assess you. Plan one full internal audit cycle against the new edition after your gap actions are closed. The transition timeline shows where it fits.
Do internal auditors need retraining for ISO 9001:2026?
They need documented awareness of what changed. Auditors who are competent in the 2015 edition do not normally need a new course. A briefing using the 2015 to 2026 Change Matrix, with an attendance record, is usually enough. Record it as competence evidence under clause 7.2.
Can we reuse our ISO 9001:2015 checklist?
You can, if you add questions for the changed requirements and check the clause references in clause 10, which has been restructured. Most teams find it faster to start from an updated checklist and carry over their own process-specific questions.
Important limits
The checklist paraphrases requirements and does not reproduce ISO 9001. Keep your licensed copy of the standard to hand during the audit. A checklist supports a competent auditor. It does not replace one, and it cannot guarantee an audit result.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are in the ISO 9001:2026 internal audit checklist?
More than 200 across clauses 4 to 10, plus a separate process-audit sheet. Questions covering requirements changed in the 2026 edition are flagged.
Is the checklist in Excel or Word?
The checklist is an Excel .xlsx file without macros. The audit plan and audit report templates are Word .docx files. All three are fully editable.
Can we audit by process instead of by clause?
Yes. The workbook has a process audit sheet as well as the clause-by-clause checklist, so you can use either approach or both.
Does it include the text of the standard?
No. ISO standards are copyrighted. Requirements are paraphrased, and you need your own licensed copy of ISO 9001:2026 for exact wording.
Can it be used for supplier audits?
It is written for internal audits of your own QMS. Many of the questions work for a supplier audit against ISO 9001, but you would need to adapt the scope and the report.
