ISO 9001 Consultant: Remote Implementation and Gap Analysis
By Ishan Maharaj, Founder and Principal Consultant. Last reviewed 26 October 2026.
Short answer: an ISO 9001 consultant helps you build, check or repair a quality management system so that a certification body can audit it. We work remotely: video sessions and document review in your own SharePoint, Google Drive or shared folder. Pricing is published: a remote ISO 9001:2026 gap assessment starts at $1,250, advisory time is $125 per hour (two-hour minimum) and a remote day is $900. No consultant can guarantee certification, because the decision belongs to your certification body.
What does an ISO 9001 consultant actually do?
The work falls into four jobs. Most clients need one or two of them, not all four.
| Job | When it fits | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Gap analysis | You want to know how far your current system is from ISO 9001:2026 before spending anything else. | A clause-by-clause findings list, ranked actions and a plan with owners. |
| Implementation | No system yet, or one that exists only as a folder of unused documents. | Processes mapped and simplified first, then procedures written for how you really work, then mapped to the standard. |
| 2015 to 2026 transition | You hold an ISO 9001:2015 certificate. | Gap assessment, transition plan, updated documents and an internal audit against the 2026 text. See transition consulting. |
| Audit recovery | You have open nonconformities or a failed audit. | Root cause analysis, corrective actions and effectiveness evidence written to survive the follow-up audit. |
Do you work on site?
No. Everything is delivered remotely. That is a deliberate choice: documents, records and registers are reviewed where they live, in your SharePoint or shared drive, and interviews with process owners run by video. We do not supply copies of ISO standards. You need your own licensed copy of ISO 9001:2026.
How much does it cost?
These are the published starting prices from our consulting page. Prices exclude taxes and are fixed in a written proposal before work starts.
| Service | Price (USD) |

Worked example: a small company with an audit booked
A 12-person distribution business holds an ISO 9001:2015 certificate and its transition audit is five months away. It buys a remote gap assessment (from $1,250). The assessment finds that risks and opportunities are recorded together in one register, that planned changes are not tracked, and that no awareness briefing covers quality culture. Those are the areas where the 2026 edition changed emphasis, according to SGS and ISO. The company then updates the documents itself with the Transition Toolkit, books a few advisory hours for review, and runs an internal audit before the certification body arrives. The numbers are illustrative; your own gap assessment decides what is needed.
Consultant, templates or both?
If someone on your team has the time and some quality experience, the Complete QMS Documentation Kit covers most of the documentation for a fraction of consulting cost. Consultant time earns its fee when an audit date is close, findings are open or nobody owns the system. Most small companies end up with a mix. The trade-offs are set out in templates versus a consultant, and a fixed-scope document review sits in between.
Two documented systems show the approach: a logistics QMS built on SharePoint, now moving to ISO 9001:2026, and an ISO 13485 system on SharePoint. For Microsoft 365 setups, see the SharePoint QMS guides.
Frequently asked questions
Can a consultant guarantee ISO 9001 certification?
No. ISO states that certification is performed by external certification bodies, not by ISO or by consultants. A consultant can prepare your system and your people, but the audit decision is the certification body's.
Do I need a consultant for the ISO 9001:2026 transition?
Not always. The transition is the certified organisation's own responsibility under Global ACI rules: you determine the changes to your context and management system. A consultant is useful if nobody on your team has time to run the gap analysis and internal audit.
What is the deadline for moving from ISO 9001:2015?
ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. Under Global ACI TECH-3-TR, no new 2015 certifications are issued after 31 March 2028, and 2015 certificates are invalid from 30 September 2029. Confirm your own dates with your certification body.
Will the transition audit take extra time?
Possibly. Global ACI leaves it to the certification body to judge and justify any extra audit time; it sets no fixed number of days. Ask your certification body for its figure in writing. More detail is on the cost page.
Can you help if we already have a SharePoint or Microsoft 365 system?
Yes. Reviewing and restructuring a QMS in SharePoint (libraries, metadata, permissions, read-only publishing) is part of the work.
