ISO 9001:2026 Training for Employees: What Clauses 7.2 and 7.3 Require

ISO 9001:2026 requires you to decide what competence each role needs, provide training or other actions to close gaps, check that those actions worked and keep records (clause 7.2), and make sure people are aware of the quality policy, objectives, their contribution and, new in 2026, quality culture and ethical behaviour (clause 7.3).

Competence versus awareness
Competence (7.2) is about being able to do the job: skills, knowledge and experience, with records. Awareness (7.3) is about everyone understanding the system and their part in it. An auditor will usually interview staff to test awareness, and look at training records and effectiveness checks to test competence.

A simple training plan
- List roles and the competence each needs in a training matrix.
- Rate each person against it and record the gaps.
- Choose actions: course, on-the-job training, mentoring.
- Check effectiveness: an observation, a quiz or a review of work.

Do all employees need ISO 9001 training?
All people doing work under the organization’s control need awareness of the items in clause 7.3. Deeper training depends on the competence each role needs.

Evidence that competence needs were determined, training or other actions were taken, their effectiveness was evaluated, and records of the result.
Is quality culture training new in ISO 9001:2026?
Yes. The 2026 edition adds awareness of quality culture and ethical behaviour, and top management must promote them.
