How to Implement ISO 9001:2026 in 10 Steps
Ishan Maharaj
To implement ISO 9001:2026, define your scope and processes, close the gaps against clauses 4 to 10, train your people, run the system for long enough to produce records, then complete an internal audit and management review before the certification audit. For most small and mid-sized organizations this typically takes six to twelve months.

The 10 steps
- Get top management commitment. Clause 5 makes leadership accountable, and the 2026 edition adds promoting quality culture and ethical behaviour.
- Define context and scope (clause 4). List internal and external issues, decide whether climate change is relevant, identify interested parties and their relevant requirements, and write the scope statement.
- Run a gap analysis against every clause. Our gap analysis workbook scores each requirement.
- Map your processes with inputs, outputs, owners, criteria and measures (clause 4.4).
- Plan for risks and opportunities separately (clauses 6.1.2 and 6.1.3) and set quality objectives (6.2).
- Create the documented information you need. ISO 9001 does not require a quality manual, but you must keep the documents and records the standard calls for and those your processes need.
- Train and make people aware (clauses 7.2 and 7.3), including the quality policy, objectives and quality culture.
- Run the system for long enough to produce records: usually two to three months.
- Audit and review. Complete a full internal audit (9.2) and a management review (9.3), and correct what you find (10.2).
- Choose an accredited certification body and complete the stage 1 and stage 2 audits.

Templates or consultant?
A capable quality manager can implement ISO 9001 in-house with good templates and training. A consultant helps when time is short or nobody has done it before. The Complete QMS Documentation Kit gives you the documents; the course teaches you how to use them.
Frequently asked questions
Is a quality manual required in ISO 9001:2026?
No. A quality manual is not required, though many organizations keep one as an overview of the system.
How long does ISO 9001 implementation take?
Typically six to twelve months for small and mid-sized organizations, depending on size, existing processes and available time.
Can a small business implement ISO 9001 without a consultant?
Yes, many do, using templates, training and a clear plan. Certification depends on how the system runs, not on who wrote the documents.
