ISO 9001:2026 Transition Deadline and Timeline: Key Dates to 2029

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. Under the Global ACI transition rules, no new ISO 9001:2015 certifications can be issued after 31 March 2028, and ISO 9001:2015 certificates stop being valid on 30 September 2029. Confirm your own audit dates with your certification body. Your certification body sets the practical deadlines inside that window, so the date that matters to you is earlier than it looks. Who decides the real deadline?
The International Accreditation Forum publishes the transition rules, accreditation bodies apply them, and your certification body turns them into a timetable. Three dates matter and they differ between certification bodies:
- The date it can start auditing to ISO 9001:2026. It needs its own accreditation for the new edition first.
- The date it stops auditing new clients and recertifications to ISO 9001:2015. This can be well before the end of the transition period.
- The last date it will accept a transition audit. It needs time after the audit for you to close nonconformities and for its own certificate decision, so it may be several months before September 2029.
Send your certification body a short email now and ask for all three dates in writing.
When should we transition?
For many companies a good moment is a scheduled surveillance or recertification audit between mid 2027 and late 2028, if your certification body offers it. That can avoid paying for a special visit, leaves a buffer for corrective actions and keeps you ahead of a possible rush in the final year, when auditor availability may get tight.
Work back from that audit. Before it, it helps to have a completed gap analysis, updated documented information, awareness training, an internal audit covering the new requirements and a management review that considered the transition. Ask your certification body what it wants to see.
A realistic 20-week plan
- Weeks 1 to 3: read the standard, review the changes, run the gap analysis and approve a transition plan.
- Weeks 4 to 12: update context and interested parties, leadership and culture evidence, risks and opportunities, change management and knowledge records.
- Weeks 13 to 16: deliver awareness training and run an internal audit against the 2026 edition.
- Weeks 17 to 20: hold management review, close actions and confirm the transition audit.

What happens if we miss the deadline?
Your ISO 9001:2015 certificate stops being valid. To be certified again you would normally need an initial certification audit, and you would be uncertified in the meantime. Customers who require ISO 9001 in contracts or supplier approvals may treat that gap as a disqualifier.
