ISO 9001:2026 Changes: What Is New Compared With ISO 9001:2015

ISO 9001:2026 was published in September 2026. It keeps the same clause structure as ISO 9001:2015 and adds a short list of new or expanded requirements: quality culture and ethical behavior, separate treatment of risks and opportunities, expanded planning of changes and wider awareness requirements. The climate change wording in clause 4 is carried over from the 2024 amendment to the 2015 edition. Most clause 8 changes are wording and layout. Under the transition rules set by accreditation bodies, ISO 9001:2015 certificates stop being valid three years after publication (September 2029). What are the key facts about ISO 9001:2026?
- Edition: ISO 9001:2026, sixth edition, replaces ISO 9001:2015.
- Published: September 2026.
- Transition deadline: this is set by accreditation bodies, not by the standard. ISO 9001:2015 certificates stop being valid three years after publication (September 2029). Your certification body's own cut-off for booking a transition audit will come earlier, so ask for it now. Our transition deadline guide lists the dates to ask about.
- Structure: clauses 4 to 10 retained. The harmonized structure used by ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 is unchanged.
- Scale of change: moderate. Most requirements are the same as in 2015.

What changed in ISO 9001:2026, clause by clause?

What is the quality culture and ethical behavior requirement?
Clause 5.1.1 now lists promoting quality culture and ethical behavior among the things top management does to demonstrate leadership and commitment. Clause 7.3 adds the same two topics to what people must be aware of. The standard does not define a method. A sensible approach is to show what top management actually does, not only what is written, and to make sure staff can say what quality and honest reporting mean in their job.
Practical evidence could include leadership walk-rounds with notes, decisions where quality was put ahead of schedule or cost, a way for staff to raise concerns without fear, and records of awareness briefings. How did risks and opportunities change?
The 2015 edition planned actions for risks and opportunities together in 6.1.2, and many organizations built a risk register with an opportunities column that stayed empty. The 2026 edition gives each its own sub-clause and introduces stronger opportunity-based thinking. You now determine, analyze and evaluate opportunities, plan actions, build them into your processes and check whether they worked, exactly as you do for risks. The ISO 9001:2026 Risk and Opportunity Register keeps a separate sheet for each, which is a convenient way to work, not a requirement of the standard.
What changed in planning of changes (6.3)?
In 2015 you considered the purpose of a change and its consequences, the integrity of the QMS, resources and responsibilities. The 2026 edition adds how the change will be communicated, how it will be monitored and evaluated, and how the results will be reviewed. What did not change?
- The process approach, risk-based thinking and the plan-do-check-act cycle.
- Most operational requirements of clause 8, apart from wording changes.
- The overall structure of monitoring, internal audit and management review in clause 9, although the management review inputs are extended.
- The text adds no specific requirements on artificial intelligence, digitalization or supply chain resilience.
