Updating Salve
This page explains how new versions of Salve reach your store, what carries over when you update, and what changed in each version.
How updates are delivered
New versions of Salve are published through the Shopify Theme Store. Shopify delivers them in one of two ways:
- Automatic update. If you haven't edited the theme's code, and the new version doesn't remove or change existing settings, Shopify replaces your installed version with the new one. You don't need to do anything, and a new copy of the theme isn't created.
- Update from the theme library. If you've edited the theme's code, or the new version changes settings, Shopify shows a notice on Online Store > Themes that an update is available. Applying it adds the new version to your theme library as an unpublished theme. Your current theme doesn't change until you publish the new one.
What carries over

Your products, metafields, metaobjects, pages, menus and apps aren't part of the theme, so updates never change them.
If a new version changes a setting so that the value you chose is no longer valid, that setting goes back to its default. The release notes say when this happens.
Before you update
- Read the release notes for the new version below.
- If you edited theme code, keep a list of the files and changes, so you can apply them again to the new version. Code edits aren't covered by support; see the support policy.
- Apply the update from Online Store > Themes. It's added as an unpublished theme.
- Preview the new version: the home page, a collection, a product with full health data, a product without health data, the cart and the contact page.
- Publish it when you're happy with it. Keep the previous version in your theme library until you're sure.
Version numbers
Salve uses three-part version numbers, such as 1.2.3:
- The first number changes when a version removes or changes settings, sections or blocks, so you may need to review your setup.
- The second number changes when a version adds features or changes how existing ones look or work, without breaking your setup.
- The third number changes for fixes.
To see which version you have, go to Online Store > Themes. The version is shown with the theme name in your theme library.

Each version's changes are listed here, newest first. A summary of each version is also in the FAQ changelog.
Version 1.0.0
First release, with three presets: Salve (wound care and first aid), Gauge (home health devices) and Remedy (supplements and OTC products).
- Health product information from metafields or dynamic sources: regulatory status, intended use, safety information, identifiers, responsible persons, ingredients, highlights and reviewers.
- An "Important safety information" band that stays on the product page when the product has safety data.
- Product and site-wide safety notices, and a safety notices page.
- Versioned product documents and a document library page.
- HSA/FSA badges, cart summary, filter shortcut and explainer section.
- Supply planner, product selector, compare tray and comparison table.
- Delivery estimate with your own cut-off time and holidays, and back-in-stock requests through Shopify's contact form.
- Quick order list, quick add, quantity steppers on product cards, quantity rules, volume pricing and a company location switcher for B2B customers.
- Text size control, high-contrast toggle, reduced motion options and keyboard support throughout. Works without JavaScript.
- Storefront and editor text in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.
